God is not happy about the Cucumber Patch

It’s odd the verses of scripture that sometimes catch my attention. On this cold winter morning where I’m wrapped in a cozy blanket, longing for the warmth of summer days, it was a verse about cucumbers that had my mind longing for the fresh produce of the garden and the sunshine that brings it about. The context of the scripture begins with a rather disturbing conversation of the Lord describing Israel as a really bad wound! Not just a wound, but one that had not been taken care of, to the point it was, in the Lord’s words, “putrifying.” I know where your mind is likely at right now… what on earth does this have to do with cucumbers?! Hang with me, I’ll get there. But first we have to discuss this wound (without the graphic details.)

The text for today’s blog is Isaiah 1:6-20 KJV
From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment. [7] Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.

The Lord does not say how the wound came about, only that it is and that it wasn’t taken care of. At the writing of this scripture, that was a description of Israel. They had not taken care of the things of God, which partly ended with the Babylonish captivity, and fully in the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, when not only their city and temple was left desolate (Matthew 23:38) but the whole land. And they were carried captive and scattered among the nations where they still continue.

[8] And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city. [9] Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

A cottage in the vineyard was booth that the gardener stayed in to watch and protect the fruit of the vine. To keep thieves and vandals away from the produce. But when the cucumbers were gone, it was a lonely barren place. That is how the Lord is now describing the state of Israel. They have no purpose, no productivity. My heart breaks as I think about how the Lord had created this people to serve and love Him, He gave them so much with so little expected in return. (Can I get a witness on the modern day churches of the Lord Jesus Christ.) As you read on you discover how the Lord had had His fill of dead religion.

[10] Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah. [11] To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats. [12] When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts? [13] Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. [14] Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. [15] And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. [16] Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;

These words should break our heart at God’s level of frustration. But does it? How does God view our church services today when He looks down on Sunday morning and see’s the few and the faithful gathering into His house, while countless others who claim the name of Jesus never darken the doorstep of a church. And those that do can give no more than one hour on a Sunday morning else it cuts too much out of their day of rest. Oh, I know. I sound like a self righteous bible thumper huh? I’m really not. I have no right to judge anyone. I too am a part of the problem.

Read on to see what God wants from His people…

[17] Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. [18] Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. [19] If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: [20] But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

God expects productivity in His church. Are we relieving the oppressed, helping the fatherless and widows? Our offerings may support an orphanage in Haiti but what about the children in our own communities, are we taking care of them? We have plenty of people on our prayer lists, but how many of us have taken time from our day to visit the people in our community who are unable to get to church? God was frustrated with Israel because they were bringing the offerings to the temple, but outside the temple they were doing nothing. It was if the gardener was provided this nice little house to lodge in, in exchange for overseeing the garden, but he sat in the cottage watching satellite television while the vandals robbed him blind and destroyed the vineyard! But for us, that fruit is our children and families and community that we have allowed the evils of the world to run roughshod over them, stealing their hearts and minds and leaving them without hope, all the while we have that hope on the inside of the house of God and refuse to use it to show people the love of God outside the church. It’s dead religion at it’s worst.

I know because I have experienced live faith! Oh my stars the joy I have experienced in the midst of the church of God when they’re doing what they should be doing. When they leave the church on Sunday morning and the ARE THE CHURCH the rest of the week, visiting nursing homes, teaching bible studies, discipling people, sharing the word of God and providing food or other needs to people in their community. We were not saved to sit on Sunday, we were save to Serve the Savior every day of the week.

This was for me!!!! But I hope it encouraged your soul as well. Let me know if it did.

In Christ’s love, Shari

When Good Words Become Bad Words

One of the greatest regrets I have for the Christian population on earth is that we allowed PRIDE to steal the symbolic meaning of the rainbow to use for the symbol of sinful behavior, thereby causing Christians to stop using it as the original symbol of hope. Or maybe that’s just me? But I won’t buy apparel or anything else to wear outwardly because I don’t want people to associate it with that agenda. And as for the word tolerance (which is the definition of long suffering), it too leaves a bad taste in my mouth because it is now a justification not to speak out against sinful behaviors in the name of love, when in actuality God never put His okay on tolerance in those circumstances.

Galatians 5:22-23 says- “22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

There is no law against any of that conduct. Those are beautiful words with beautiful truth. But what about the words before them. What about putting scripture into context and not just talking about the pretty parts? Let’s put it in context of the law of God and understand His expectation of His children.

Scripture tells us that by the blood of Jesus Christ we are no longer under the law in Romans 6:14 –
For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

But read the scripture leading into Galatians 5:22. It too mentions that we are not under the law. But that doesn’t make the law of no effect, it just means when the law is broken, God gives us grace to return to Him, who is Holy.

Galatians 5:18-21 KJV
[18] But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. [19] Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, [20] Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, [21] Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

The problem with allowing the PRIDE movement to take the rainbow as their symbol for sin is that the rainbow was created by a Holy God. The nauseating thing about tolerating behaviors that go against everything in scripture is that every time a Christian tolerates (meaning accepts) sinful behaviors as okay, we distance ourselves from God. Because He has zero tolerance of their nonsense or ours. The same is true for any sin. Not just that of one organization. Tell me some of our own sins don’t fall in the descriptions in verses 19-21 of Galatians 5. Tell me we all have not been guilty of some those sins, but because we’re not under the law, we understand that the grace of God forgives us. Grace is a wonderful thing. But it too is a word misused. Discover how Mitolyn and the Purple Peel Diet can work together! Read Mitolyn reviews to learn about its brain-boosting benefits and how the Purple Peel Diet aids in achieving a balanced lifestyle.

I once heard an acronym for the word grace which is God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. It not only makes a great bumper sticker, it should remind us that those things which we tolerate, Christ died for. He was beaten, spit on, had his flesh torn into pieces and nails driven into his hands and feet, and then jolted down into a hole as He hung on that cross, likely tied as well, so when they dropped the cross into the hole it would tear his flesh and allow Him to come off. This was a reminder for myself of what Christ did for me as I tip toe around people trying not to hurt their feelings.

If you are not a child of God, you may or may not agree with my opinion. And that’s fine, you have that right because God gives you free will. He wants you to make your own decisions including the decision to get to know Him. But if you are a child of God, you know that it’s not my opinion. It’s the word of God and it is right.

This is not a Jesus Chick blogpost against homosexuality or any of the other tolerated sins of the world. This is a blogpost about getting back to the holiness God intended for His people. Not the pious holiness of religion. That makes me want to puke. But the separation of the child of God from sin by never tolerating what takes people away from Christ. The reason people have stopped believing what a Christian tells them is there is no evidence that the Christian believes it either!

When a Christians says that sin is okay, the very thing that God gave His life for so we could have a relationship with Him and unimaginable by the Old Testament saints, we’re causing the word of God to be questioned. How am I to tolerate and justify sin and then say “be ye holy because God is holy,” (Paraphrased from 1 Peter 1:16). The world has watered down holiness.

It’s like watered down sweet tea that’s set in a hot car for a couple of hours while you shopped. Then you get back in the car and take a big swig and it’s like “Yuk!” That’s no longer tea. Well when you put enough tolerance in things in your life, your life is no longer holy, and it makes God want to puke. That’s what He said in the book of Revelation to the church of the Laodiceans when He told them in Revelation 3:16 “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

This word really hit home with me this morning. I am tired of tolerating people in more ways than I care to admit. They say offensive things to me or in front of me and I smile in understanding when I should grimace because it was a slap in my Lord’s face if it was done by a child of God. When we tolerate the absolute disgusting behaviors of the world around us we’re saying that it’s okay because God died for that. No, God died for that so they could come out of it and have a relationship with Him, not continue to live in it or see it condoned by the church.

Several churches in our area have recently came out of their denomination because of denominational tolerance and acceptance of sin. God bless you! I pray your congregations grow and that God’s blessings are poured out upon you for taking holiness seriously.

What ever the sin, it’s not worth the price of hurting my Lord. That’s the thought I want to drive into my own brain. The price of tolerance with acceptance is separation from God. We can love people even if they choose to stay in a life of sin. God gave them free will to live as they determined. But He did not give us the right to tell them it’s okay.

Holiness doesn’t give anyone the right to be hateful. God died for all people. Regardless of how they’re living. But if you want to know Him… you’re going to have to open yourself up to a conversation about what’s right and what’s wrong.

What Direction are you Going?

It’s a question I have to ask myself daily. Actually, multiple times a day, because every decision I make takes me in a direction. If I’m scrolling social media and a negative or immoral post pops up, (to which there are plenty!) I have to choose if I’m going to linger there in that place or quickly scroll past. Am I going to comment or leave it alone? Once that decision is made, what will be the effect? Oh my stars, life can be hard! But it doesn’t have to be. God knew about Social media and any other thing in our life when He gave David or Ezra (it’s been said to be one or the other) the words of Psalm 1 to pen around 444 B.C.

I find it interesting that sin is sin, no matter the century. And although we may struggle in various ways throughout the centuries, the way they vary, isn’t by much. Perhaps only by technique.

As I begin to ponder the upcoming 2025, I truly want my relationship with God to be deeper and my walk steady. Nothing in my life is ever very steady. I fluctuate daily on focus, attitude, and strength, both physically and spiritually. Lord, help me to be a better Shari. If this is your story too, pray that prayer with your name and let’s study together.

The Way of the Righteous

Psalm 1:1-6
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. [2] But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. [3] And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

I have a hard time thinking of myself as righteous. I know the level of wickedness that can be within me at any time. But my righteousness does not come from any means of my own, but rests entirely upon the righteousness of my salvation by the blood of Jesus Christ. He saved me even knowing my struggle to keep a pure mind, a good attitude and a focus on Him.

Psalm 1:1 reminds us that our daily surroundings are fundamental to our ability to focus on the things of God. We cannot walk, stand or sit with wickedness of this world, whether it is in the form of people, media or any other type of exposure. Yes it’s there, right in front of us in this world, but we can move out of its path if we so choose. The problem is we often choose to linger far longer than we should, allowing the corrupt world to penetrate our thoughts and sew seeds of doubt, immorality, anger, etc. in our minds and hearts that take root very deep. But the word of the Lord acts as a weed killer and gets in there, uprooting that ugliness that we allowed to enter and then washes it away, planting fruits of godliness in its stead. But we have to be in His word. Opening it up daily. The inward body is no different than the outward. It has to be cleansed. It is in His word that we find strength. I understand withering. I’ve felt that way for over a year. That I was withering away because of so many things in my life that are happening right now. And then I read these words… and suddenly I feel as if God just watered my soul and my withered self is unfolding and reaching toward the Heaven in praise! Can you feel it too?

The Way of the Unrighteous

[4] The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. [5] Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

There is a separation from “all things God” that the lost (those who do not know Jesus) are not even aware of. You cannot experience God if He’s not in your heart. What a very sad statement. And I know how sad because until 1996 I had never truly experienced the Lord. I knew of God, but I did not KNOW GOD.

2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

There has to be a time when you come out of the sinful world you’re in and begin walking in the newness of Christ. When you begin to form a relationship with God as a very real Person in your life. Walking with Him. Not the world. Sitting with Him. Not the world. And finding delight in Him, again… not the world. The world wants you to be judgmental, miserable, covetous and envious. God wants you to be satisfied… which is the epitome of happiness.

When I am unsteady, it reminds me of my life before Christ. I know I’m not living the way God intended because He is the Rock of my salvation. He does not move.

In Him I find all in need for this day and every day.

The Way of God

[6] For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

God knows the way, and He knows you and I. He knows we struggle. But we don’t have to. In his word we can find our direction every day for every issue we face. In 444 BC it might have been a naked woman on the roof top. Today may be a naked body on social media. Different day, different technique of exposure, same sin. Were it not for God’s mercy David would have perished. But we will meet King David in eternity someday because He knew God.

Do you know Him? If not, there’s a salvation link on the top of my blog, please follow the link and learn Who Jesus is. If you do now Him, and like me you struggle daily to stay in tune with Him. Turn to His word daily. It’s a “spiritual wash cloth” as and an old preacher friend of mine once said. Bathe in His glory!!!

Are You Living in Hope or Circumstance?

The Apostle Peter was known for his quick (sometimes without thought) actions, and most importantly his willingness to follow and teach Christ, until his death found him crucified upside down on a cross. I’m sure like most church folk, there were people who found and noted the imperfections in Peter’s life. But when the end of his life came, nobody would have questioned his loyalty to the Savior and to the Word of God.

It wasn’t Happenstance that found Peter, it was Jesus.

Matthew 4:18-20 KJV
And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. [19] And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. [20] And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

Peter walked off his job and away from his livelihood for a life of following Christ. Are we ready to do that? Are we ready for that level of commitment in the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ? This is where living for Jesus is not for the faint of heart. Like Peter, I just didn’t happen to find Jesus in 1996. Jesus found me in a most miraculous way. I wasn’t looking for Him that February 18th Sunday when I went to hear Mike Worf preach, at my husband’s request. But Jesus was waiting for me at the church and by His Spirit, through the preaching of the word of God, He spoke to my heart in a most profound way. Shortly thereafter I left the life I knew of following the world and became a follower of Jesus Christ. I didn’t leave my job, but I most assuredly left the worldly things that had captivated my attention and drew my thoughts into a mentally un unhealthy place filled with depression, anxiety and false expectations of people. For more than a quarter of a century I have served the Lord as a teacher, singer, speaker and soul seeking (seeking souls I can encourage for Christ.) But it has not been without distractions and lesser levels of commitment.

It Wasn’t Coincidence that found us, it was Christ’s Intention

1 Peter 1:1-9 KJV
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, [2] Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

It could just as well add, Grantsville, Mt. Zion, Arnoldsburg, Chloe… wherever you are, Peter is speaking to us, in this day and age. When it says the elect, it’s meaning a child of God where the only vote needed was His. If you have made that decision to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, you are among those that Peter is speaking to and it was God’s design (as it is for everyone) that you be saved. But just like the election we just came through, you have to through your hat in the ring. “Here I am Christ, ready for service!” The election was swift, you accepted what Christ did on the cross as payment for your sin, your name was written n glory, you are now in the army of God! How exciting is that? You were elected to be a child of the Most High! But If it is so exciting why are Christians so negative?

Christ’s intentions for His children upon their salvation was not to allow us to continue in the world, being frustrated with what others are doing, pouring our time and money into material things or working ourselves to death so we can have more. But to captivate our minds with His Spirit and fill us with His desires of service and purpose, knowing that we will find true happiness and contentment in those things. So how is it that our focus gets so eschewed?

Paul told the people of Corinth in 2 Corinthians 10:5-6 that they should be “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

There is a constant war in our minds with a disobedient fleshly spirit that would desire to stay in the world’s control. Exalting those things above the Lord, because that is Satan’s desire. He knows that he can no longer have the soul of a child of God, but he can have our thoughts, or encourage our focus on world endeavors or distresses to the point that Jesus and His purpose for us is no longer evident and we are miserable.

We have life priorities. Family, jobs, responsibilities, etc that Christ does not expect us to ignore. Nor does He expect those things to have first priority. When Peter left the boat, he didn’t leave his wife and community. But rather he focused on those people through Christ’s purpose! That’s good stuff right there! Are we focused on our priorities through Christ? When we’re stressing our family and friends, is it through Christ’s concerns for them? When we go to work, are we looking at our career as a door that Christ has opened to serve Him in that place? It’s not coincidence that you are anywhere in particular today… God has purpose in it!

But where is the excitement that caused Peter to jump out of the boat not once but twice. First to follow Christ in the ministry, and the second to follow Him onto the rough waters. We are not living (or at least I’m not) in His lively hope!

It’s Not our Circumstances that should Control our thoughts, But Our Lively Hope!

[3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, [4] To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, [5] Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. [6] Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: [7] That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: [8] Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: [9] Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Jesus had said to his disciple Thomas, who came to believe after seeing the resurrected Christ, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me” (John 20:29). Peter, having heard those words, echoes them here: “You love him even though you have never seen him.” Faith brings both salvation and the promise of a day when pain will end and perfect justice will begin. Faith will be rewarded and evil will be punished. But what should we do until then? The Bible gives us a simple but difficult answer: Because we know the future, we must faithfully serve God here and now. If today that means resolving a conflict, mending a hurt, working a dull job, confronting a belligerent child, rebuilding a marriage, or just waiting for guidance—do it all with the joy of God, in His lively hope, who will return with the reward he has promised!

The Seducing of the American Church

Now that the election is over, perhaps my mind will settle down a little, probably very little, but for at least this morning, I’m not thinking about politics. Nope. That’s a lie. This morning I’m thinking about the politics of the American Church, although it has been since the ancient of age in one form or another. Paul dealt with it in his day, and we continue.

Colossians 2:1-5 KJV
For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; [2] That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; [3] In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. [4] And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words. [5] For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.

The Seductive Lie

The problem that Paul was combating (struggling) in the Colossian church was likely the heresy known as Gnosticism (from the Greek word for knowledge). Gnosticism undermined the foundational Christian teaching that Paul had taught the church. The Gnostics insisted important, secret knowledge was hidden from most believers. But Paul taught, and we believe today, that Christ provides all the knowledge we need.

When I got saved, I had been around the Bible all my life. My Dad sat daily in his chair with the Bible across his lap, studying the word of God. But for me, prior to salvation, I could pick up the Bible and it might as well have been a geometry text book, because I understood it about that well. But February 18th, 1996, something happened. When I read the Bible, it was as if God read it back to me defined. The Spirit revealed the meaning of that scripture and from that point forward, I knew it was alive! I was speaking to God and He was speaking to me.

Paul taught that communication with Christ and one another was vital to church growth. The Gnostics thought and loved that they were in possession of a secret. That’s a problem. In John 18:20 it says “Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

The arrogance of anyone telling you that God tells them things that He doesn’t tell others, is a lie. Everything we need to know is in the Word of God. False teachers love it when everyone hangs on every word they say, because it gives them job security and makes those who follow them feel they can’t do without them. That is the seducing lie. Paul warned them not to be beguiled (deceived) by their enticing (seducing) words.

The Spiritual Snare

Gnostics believed that humans were divine beings trapped in the material world. Okay, so now I have the Madonna song stuck in my head, “Material Girl.” Nothing divinely spiritual about that. They also thought that the world was created by an imperfect spirit. They believed that to escape the material world, humans needed to gain gnosis, or special knowledge, from outside the material because spiritual reality was good, but physical reality was evil, including our physical bodies. Well, I did think of the Madonna song.

I can assure you the only divine thing about me, is Christ living in me! And to think that every physical thing is evil is ingratitude of the creation of God. Certainly we can put more value on the material things in the world than we should, but the things are not evil, it’s the heart of man that’s evil. Jeremiah 17:9 says “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

It’s a snare of any preacher or teacher who does not look at the entire word of God, rather than picking and choosing what portions of it fits into their theories and agendas. That kind of thinking traps the believer into not relying on the Spirit for discernment. Never believe anything that cannot be backed up by the Word of God.

The Savior’s Humanity

The third gnostic deception was that because the physical bodies were evil, Christ couldn’t have possibly been human. While our very human minds find it hard to grasp God being fully God and fully human, this is God we’re talking about. He can do anything… except of course sin. But that didn’t stop Him from feeling the temptation of it. When Satan and Christ were in the wilderness for 40 days, surely Christ’s hunger was physical. Satan’s temptation with food would have been felt, but it wasn’t acted on. Rather Christ told him in Luke 4:4 “And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

It’s important that a child of God understands that God understands. He experienced the same temptation that we do. But He was God. He did not succumb to the flesh, but rather relied on the God factor within Him to fight the temptation. The same God factor that is within us after salvation. We need to deepen our relationship with Christ, not depend on the preacher to be our only source of information. Gnosticism became fashionable in the second century AD. Even in Paul’s day, these ideas sounded attractive to many, and exposure to such teachings could easily seduce a church that didn’t know Christian doctrine well. Similar teachings still pose significant problems for many in the church today. We combat heresy by becoming thoroughly acquainted with God’s Word through personal study and sound Bible teaching.

Gnostic belief is an example of how false teaching and dependence upon man rather than God can seduce a believer away from reading the Word and hearing the Spirit speak. We need the preacher. But we need God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit more.

Read the Word!!!!

There’s a Difference Between Arrogance and Confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ

2 Corinthians 3:1 KJV
[1] Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?

One of the many advantages of being in the Ministry is, that I have had the privilege of meeting many, many, preachers and teachers of the word of God. From the time of my salvation in 1996, I count it an honor of God that He placed ministers in my life – to the point that I felt as if I had instructors in the faith walking by my side daily for probably the first five years of my ministry. I had breakfast multiple times a week with ministry people who discipled me and allowed me to ask question after question, pouring into me the Word of God and its application to life. I had lunch once a week with brother Doyle Ballengee who taught me the way of the soul winner. I attended Bible College with instructors whose depth of knowledge was so vast I never ever grew weary of hearing them speak. I said all that to say this, their level of humility was every bit as deep as their knowledge. They knew from whence their wisdom came and they bore no credit, but gave the glory to God.

When Paul asked the question in verse one of 2nd Corinthians 3, saying (to Shari quote it), “We’re not patting ourselves on the back, nor do we need you to do it,” to anyone who didn’t know him it may have seemed arrogant. Paul was anything but arrogant. He may or may not have been arrogant when he was a Pharisee. But following his conversion to Christ, he never claimed glory for himself.

In Galatians 1:11-20, Paul tells of his humble beginnings as a minister of the Gospel which was not devised by human wisdom, nor had he received it from the other apostles; rather, he was taught directly by Jesus Christ Himself. He continues by reminding them that he had been trained in and was fanatically devoted to the traditions of Judaism. When God called Paul on the Damascus road, he was commissioned to preach the Gospel of Christ. He didn’t go to bible college or go to Jerusalem to receive instruction from the apostles. Rather, he went into Arabia for a time, and not until three years later did he go to Jerusalem. Can you imagine devoting yourself to the word of God in such a manner? I can’t, because I haven’t. I’ve been a minister of the gospel for 15 of my 28 years of Salvation. When I say minister, I mean that in the sense of speaking and teaching the Word of God. I do not have the confidence of Paul. Nor the reputation. I have too much Shari sometimes to keep my mouth shut. Which brought me to this study today. I have been accused of being judgmental, (due to my job as the Ridgeview News Publisher). The world loves the verse, in Matthew 7:1 that states simply, “Judge not that ye be not judged.” It’s not that simple. John 7:24 also says “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” We cannot judge someone’s heart (as Matthew 7:2 says) but we can for certain discern their actions whether they are right or wrong.

What’s Our Testimony?

Paul continues his chat with the Corinthians saying that their testimony preceded them.

[2] Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: [3] Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. [4] And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:

The reason was given as to why they didn’t need letters of commendation, to or from the church at Corinth, because that church was their living epistle, and which was much preferable to any written one. Paul was proclaiming the word of God that had been burned into his heart by the Spirit of God. The same Spirit that dwells in all children of God. But, it’s the communication with the Spirit that makes the difference. It’s the understanding of Who it is that the Spirit is.

[5] Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; [6] Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. [7] But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: [8] How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?

When the children of Israel saw Moses after he had physically been in the presence of God, (Exodus 34:29) the Shekinah glory was so bright that they couldn’t bear to look at him for fear of blindness. That’s how amazing God is. So Paul asked, “Is not the Spirit that is within us, the same God?” Yes it is!!! Should there not be evidence that He is within you coming to the outside of us? Would it not build confidence in us, the closer we got to God in conversation, and understanding of what it was He wants us to do. Would it not also humble you to be in the presence of His greatness.

If any of us had a true knowledge of how great the Spirit of God is within us. It would either scare us to death, or it would cause us to never want to leave communing with Him.

Paul understood the seriousness of the fact that he was speaking for God on earth. The words that the Holy Spirit gave to Paul are still being read two thousand plus years later. What about what we say? Will it have that kind of staying power? I doubt it. But the words we speak may have eternal ramifications.

When I was ministering in New Mexico a few years ago, I spoke at a church where, following the service, a man came up to me and prophesied something. For the record, it was a Baptist church, but this man was not Baptist. He had come to the service to hear me speak and sing. I felt very uncomfortable with the words he spoke. I don’t even remember what they were. But he spoke as though God had given him insight into my life and the direction I should go. That’s dangerous ground.

Just as I don’t know the intents of someone’s heart, nor do I know the intents of God’s heart for them. God does the calling, not man.

For certain it was a different era in Paul’s day. The church was new, and the members of it were willing to die, and many did, for the cause of Christ. It’s said of the church today that the members won’t even live for Christ, forget asking them to die.

To another group of believers Pauls words of wisdom were clear as to the expectations of the life of a Christian.

1 Thessalonians 5:19-28 KJV

19 Quench not the Spirit.
20 Despise not prophesyings.
21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
25 Brethren, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.
27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

It would be arrogance on my part if I said I lived Paul’s words out every day in my life. And it would be a lie. Every Christian fails. The difference is, the attitude of the heart. Paul was not a perfect man either, but he was confident in what he knew to be the word of God.

How to Make God Happy

Philippians 2:1-7 KJV
If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, [2] Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. [3] Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. [4] Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. [5] Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: [6] Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: [7] But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

We live in such a selfish generation. It cracks me up (and not in a good way) when I hear people say that the young people of today are an entitled and spoiled generation. I’ve been guilty of saying it. And then I think, “Really, just the young people? What about the old people? Like us.” Those who get angry if all the pieces of their daily puzzle doesn’t fall into place. If their hamburger was missing a pickle or their fries were too soft. Let’s get real for a minute about our own attitudes and expectations in life. Let’s talk about our priorities and lack of commitment to the things of God.

When Paul wrote to the Philippians he was in prison. Not even the prison of today, but a crude cell, no personal potty, there were not three hots and a cot. But his priorities and thoughts were on the people of the church. Is ours? Do we encourage one another?

Comfort one Another

How do you do that? In another letter Paul answered that question when he told the church to comfort one another by reminding each other that Jesus is coming back!

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

This has got to be a top priority in our life to keep our minds and attitudes in check about what’s important. Forget about the missing pickle, what about the missing soul that will be in Heaven because we didn’t take the time to tell our friends and family about Jesus?

Have Fellowship with the Spirit

Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:15 to Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

This wasn’t to make him a scholar. This was to help him understand the importance of staying connected with God every day. This world sucks the life out of you. There are some serious things that occur in the course of a day. It’s not always just about the pickle. Sometimes there are issues that need our attention but further more need God’s guidance. In two days I had two such incidents. Two grandchildren in what could have been a life altering incident. But praise God, they were both fine. But in those moments, I didn’t give one iota about a pickle or anything else. I knew I had to turn both of the boys over to God and deal with He decided. One of those issues is still ongoing. My grandson needs the Lord’s intervention. But I want to back up to the drive through and reorder. And God says no… you get what I give you.

Bowels of Mercy

That feeling in the pit of your stomach when something breaks your heart and makes you want to do something for someone. We expect God to have a limitless supply for us, but our level of mercy is not quite as deep. But we know when God is working in us and through us, and causes us to care at a new level, but it i’s at that time that we have to determine “what am I going to do with this mercy?” Will you act on it, or just give them a quick word and move on.

God said it is the three points of this message that fulfill His joy! This is how we make God happy.

  • We comfort one another – that means Christians should be together.
  • We fellowship with the Spirit – that means we should be with God.
  • We have bowels of mercy – Which means to act when God calls.

Are you there. Or like me, could you use a little more work in making God happy? When you think about all you have to be grateful for, it should cause us to talk to God about what to do with it. Life can get serious in a heartbeat.

Don’t worry about the pickle.🥒

But the tongue of the wise is health

In the land of social media the warriors are brave. There is no bloodshed, right? Everyone has the right to throw their opinion into the arena, whether or not it’s truth, lie, or unknown. We all know the adage we were told as children, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” And even though we also know that the adage was a lie (words do hurt) it was a different era in time. There was no social media, and most children were taught the proper behaviors and acceptable manner in treating people. There was always the bully, but they were never applauded by the majority, just a few weak followers who thought they were in the “in crowd” by being a friend of the bully and not the victim.

We’ve read the news stories of the worst end of a critical spirit. It’s the end of a life because the hope was criticized out of a heart until nothing was left but despair and a life was ended by suicide. Is it any wonder our kids don’t understand that bullying is wrong when adults have yet to figure it out?

Proverbs 12:18 KJV
There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

Solomon… such a wise man. (Except when it came to women, not so much on that side of his life). But the words from Proverbs 12:18 stirred my soul this morning as I became burdened for the critical spirit I witness daily throughout social media. Nobody uses constructive criticism, where you build something, but rather destructive criticism where they can tear people down with an end goal of making them feel less. Putting them in their place… a place that is beneath the one in charge of the criticism. They feel it’s their obligation to line this person out. Never thinking of the soul and the end result. The nights with tears on their pillow or the pain of a broken heart. God help this entitled nation. I wonder if the people down south, who have lost everything, care one iota about the opinions of any entitled neighbor. I’ll bet there’s not an entitled neighbor because that playing field was leveled by hurricane Helene that put everyone in that area in the same mess. Praise God for those who were spared, and pray for God’s mercy on those in the middle of that tragedy. It puts life in perspective quickly for those experiencing it. But those of us high on a hill, looking down on the souls of others from our safe haven continue to think our opinions matter.

  • Opinions can’t stop a storm.
  • Opinions can’t stop a disease.
  • Opinions can’t stop tragedy.

I am of the opinion that my opinion only matters when it’s got God’s stamp of approval on it. Solomon said our words either injure or heal. But God’s word is more powerful than a twoedged sword! If a soul reads it, and just takes it for what it is, leaving mans opinion out of it, the word of God will reveal everything we need to know about life.

Hebrews 4:12 KJV
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

I shared a video on the Ridgeview News Facebook page of a friend preaching at a 1982 Foundation Event. The post got several positive responses. But one reader felt the necessity to post his negative opinion again and again. Another reader suggested I had an agenda. Well duh. I’ve never denied it and have tried to make it known that my agenda is to glorify God with the truth. Which includes the gospel truth. I do not deny the secular world their say, God gave everyone free will, so will I. But I am the one who spends many, many dollars to pay for the publishings of the Ridgeview News and The Jesus Chick sites. I do that so that I may share the gospel of Jesus Christ and share the truth about the goings on in my community. That’s my agenda. Truth.

And to tell you the truth, I’ve been struggling again. Frustrations have overwhelmed me, and some of those frustrations have come in the form of opinions. I watch as my mother ages at a rapid pace from dementia, and all that matters to her is her family. Who will stop by. Who can I tell her about so she can remember a happier time. She cares nothing about my opinion. We talk about Heaven and we talk about family. That’s it. I don’t share negative stories with her. What purpose would that serve.

And there is where I’ll land today. What purpose are our words serving?

There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

Great is the mystery, but sweet is the understanding

I seen a meme this morning that used the gifts given to Jesus to make a “funny”, saying There’s gold, there’s frankensense… but wait, there’s myrrh!” You might have to be an essential oil fanatic like myself to think that’s even funny, but I thought it was hysterical! And it’s how I feel about opening the word of God. There’s treasures to be found, Sense to be made, and so much more!!!!

We can learn about God through our day to day experiences with him. When we seek to follow his commands, we learn new things about him and his values and why this world is so insane. It is through His word that learn we can rely on Him for everything in our lives, and then we discover that there is so much more to God than we ever imagined.

I hesitate this morning to even write about Matthew, because it’s not like I would have one iota of understanding of him. He was a numbers guy, a tax collector. I’m not a numbers gal. I would imagine that Matthew was a very logical thinking guy. Everything had to add up! But when it comes to Jesus, there’s nothing logical about it, even though everything certainly aligns.

Matthew 9:9-12 KJV

And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. [10] And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. [11] And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? [12] But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

The Pharisees saw Matthew and his tax buddies setting with Jesus and they couldn’t understand the logic of hanging out with such a low class of people. They viewed those people as unworthy of their company. But Christ knew their lifestyle and viewed it as an opportunity to build His church. He then used a very simplistic analogy for the religious Pharisees to understand, that just as the sick need a doctor, the lost need a Savior. This was logic that Matthew and his friends understood, just as anyone of any other personality and ability can understand. It is instilled in the heart of man, that there’s more to life. Or myrrh, as the comedian said!

So much more!

1 Timothy 3:16 KJV

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Great is the mystery, but sweet is the understanding.

Timothy knew what Matthew had learned. Matthew through his first hand knowledge of being with Jesus in the flesh. And Timothy, through his first hand knowledge of being with Jesus in the Spirit.

It wasn’t up for debate

Matthew and Timothy had both experienced Jesus! And so have I. When I first became saved in 1996, I couldn’t get enough of Jesus. I wanted to hang out with preachers and teachers everyday. I met with them for breakfast, I was in church at every opportunity, and not only my own church, but anyone else’s that was having a revival meeting. There was no question that Jesus was God and He was very real, because His presence was so obvious in my life.

In those days when Jesus walked the earth, there were eye witnesses to Him, and the miracles that He performed. As far as Timothy was concerned there was no controversy.

We live in a world of controversy. Someone is always wanting to argue about something, especially when it comes to faith or morality. But for Timothy, neither were up for debate because he knew Jesus and knew the teaching of Jesus because he stayed in his word and with his people.

I know for a fact that if I’m struggling to deal with something in my life it’s almost always because I’m out of God’s word. Oh, I’ll still have struggles, but if I stay in God’s word He’ll help me makes sense of it all.

Timothy preached a 5 point message in that one verse of 3:16

Justified in the Spirit

Upon salvation a child of God receives the Spirit of God within themselves for the constant guidance of the Lord Himself. It’s not up for debate. The Lord speaks everyday. But are we listening.

Seen of Angels

I find it hysterical, not really funny, but ridiculous that the world loves the cute little cherubs or the beautifully ornate angels statues. But most people do not understand the purpose of these God created beings. They were created to glorify and praise God. They serve Him and He gave them spiritual abilities that could go far as killing 185,000 soldiers (2 Kings 18:35). Angels are indeed gloriously beautiful. They’re always mentioned as male in the Bible. Not female as they’re mostly imaged in todays society.

Preached to the Gentiles

This was the hardest thing for those Pharisees to understand. Jesus loved sinners and thats how they viewed Gentiles. They didn’t deserve salvation. Tell me that’s not how we often look at the lowest and vilest of people in the world today. The rapist, murderer, child molesters… they don’t deserve Jesus, right? No, that is who Jesus came to save and you and I are in that group. Everyone is a sinner. There are no righteous people until they have accepted the Lord’s death, burial and resurrection and then His blood makes them righteous.

Believed on in the World

Another 3:16 verse is John 3:16 that many unsaved can quote.

John 3:16 KJV

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

That’s who Jesus came to save, the entire world. The very world that He created. That’s where people sometimes have a hard time understanding, why would God create a world that was lost? For the same reason that you and I have children. We love them and we want them to love us. Not forcibly, but just because we created them. There is no greater thing in life than the love reciprocated of your children.

Received up into Glory

The last time Jesus was seen in person was when He ascended back to Heaven. Over 500 witnesses watched as He floated off to glory. Many were killed for professing it. Would they have been willing to die for a lie? No, I don’t think so. But it doesn’t matter who believes and who doesn’t in the grand scheme of life with regards to whether or not it happened. It did. And it’s going to happen again when Jesus returns for His church and takes them home to be with Him for eternity.

But what about you? Will you bee received by Him, or will He leave you behind to deal with this earth when evil is released to it’s fullness? Please, make sure you’re saved. Tell your family about Jesus. Do you have questions, then message me! I’ll do my very best to answer you quickly. God bless ya!!! Love ya… mean it.

Don’t Get Wrapped Up in the World

I have met my fair share of people who are wrapped up in the notion, even if they say they believe in faith in Christ alone for salvation, that somehow what they’re doing is more important than why they’re doing it.

The graphic below is a very good way to explain salvation. I didn’t come up with the idea, but I love it! This is what our faith is in. The fact that Jesus was born of a virgin and came to earth, He lived for 32 years (ish) until He was crucified on the cross for claiming to be God. He was God and proved that when He arose from the dead and ascended back to Heaven. A fact witnessed by over 500 people. He’s coming back, that too is a fact. Believing that is salvation. There is nothing in between the images for you to believe or do in order for you to be saved. Just faith. Nothing more. But there’s plenty to do to keep you out of trouble.

Galatians 5:1-8,10 KJV
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

The vast majority of the world is in bondage. How do I know that? Because they’re not in church. And now is where those “not in church” tell me they don’t have to be in church to be saved. You’re right. But, I will stand eye to eye with you and tell you if you’re not in church, you’re probably so bound up in the world you can’t get there.

I witness it in my only family. I don’t cut them any slack either, because I want to know that when I die, or they die, we’ll see each other again! This is not a game, but the world is playing church like a game of checkers. And when they get to the other side of the board and say “King me.” The owner of the board is going to say, “depart from me I never knew you.”

Paul told the Galatians in chapter 5 that they were indeed free. But don’t use that freedom to get tangled up in this world. Families are so busy running to and fro to ballgames and other events, that there is no time for the Lord. Not on Sunday, nor Monday through Saturday. But yet they say they know Him. How? How can you know someone that you never talk to? How can you possibly know His will, when you don’t read His word, You don’t listen to His Word and you don’t act out His Word? Yes… faith is all that is required for salvation. But that’s not all that’s required for the evidence of salvation. If you truly understood what those images of salvation meant, that God, the Creator of the universe, placed His Son in the womb of a woman, who then walked the earth and proved in countless ways that He was God, only to be denied and then crucified by the people He came to save. The most gruesome of deaths imaginable where He hung on a cross with his skin ripping and tearing by the nails, beaten to the point He was unrecognizable and His skin looked like hamburger, and yet in that state He gave eternal life to a thief, and then He died. But as they say… but wait, that’s not all. He arose. He wasn’t in that tomb and the government lied. I know… we’re all shocked that the government would do that, right? And again His resurrection and ascension was witnessed by hundreds of people. People who later were willing to die rather than deny the truth. And when all is said and done, He’s coming back, and He’s going to call His church out of this wicked world. He did all that for you. But yet, you don’t feel the need to know Him.

I am not writing in a self righteous tone. I am so aware of my failures… I know that I have no righteousness in me were it not for the Holy Spirit. But I also know the freedom I have because of the Holy Spirit. The freedom not to allow this world to tear me down. Not to allow it to be burden on me to the point that I lose hope. I’ve been there! It’s why it breaks my heart to see family and friends are there.

My point of bringing this to our attention today, is in hopes that someone will read and be encouraged to begin a closer walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. It doesn’t make your life perfect. But it does give you perfect peace and that is worth it all!!!

Even after last week when I lost my temper in a meeting and derailed on the Mayor, I had peace. Yes I was upset and aggravated. But when I got settled down and allowed the Holy Spirit to comfort my soul and bring spiritual logic into the situation I had such an abundance of joy. I knew that the demonic forces of this world had brought all that upon me, but that God had me covered and He would settle the issue. Not me. I could have just as well attempted to settle it on my own and continue the confrontation,

What has you bound up? Does it make an eternal difference and does it encourage you and your relationship with the One who created you with a purpose. You have a purpose in this world, but this world’s plan for you is to make you miserable. Don’t let it. Allow God to wrap you up in His Comforting Holy Spirit. It’s then that the world can’t touch you.
